How to Fill the DS-160 Form as an International Student (2026 Guide)

Before your US Embassy or Consulate interview, every visa applicant must complete the DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application form. For students applying for F-1 or J-1 visas, this is one of the most important documents you'll fill out. Errors can lead to visa delays or denials. Here's how to do it right.

What Is the DS-160?

The DS-160 is the US Department of State's standard online application form for all nonimmigrant visas, including F-1 and J-1. You submit it electronically, then print the confirmation page with a barcode to bring to your interview.

Key Sections of the DS-160 for Students

  • Personal Information: Use your exact passport name, date of birth, and nationality.
  • Travel Information: Enter the date you plan to travel to the US. It's okay to estimate.
  • US Contact: Use your university's international student office address if you don't have a US host.
  • Work/Education/Training Info: List your current educational background accurately.
  • Security & Background Questions: Answer all truthfully. Even minor errors here can cause complications.

Tips for a Smooth DS-160 Submission

  • Save your application ID and password frequently — the form times out after 20 minutes of inactivity
  • Use a desktop browser (Safari or Chrome). Mobile browsers sometimes cause issues.
  • Do not leave required fields blank — use "N/A" where a field doesn't apply
  • Photo requirements: 2x2 inches, white background, taken within the last 6 months

DS-160 vs SEVIS Fee: Which Comes First?

You can complete the DS-160 and pay the SEVIS fee in either order, but both must be done before your visa interview. Most students pay the SEVIS fee first (using SEVISMate or fmjfee.com), then fill out the DS-160.

Double-Check Before Submitting

Review every section carefully before submitting the DS-160. Once submitted, changes require starting a new application. Your SEVIS fee payment and visa application must use the exact same name spelling.
