How to Maintain Your F-1 Student Status in the USA: 2026 Guide

Your F-1 student visa status is not guaranteed for the entire duration of your studies — it is your responsibility to maintain it actively. Losing your status, even accidentally, can have serious consequences including deportation and a bar on future US visas. Here are the rules you must follow in 2026.

1. Maintain Full-Time Enrollment

F-1 students must be enrolled full-time every semester (except summer, unless it's your first semester or you are completing a thesis). Full-time is typically 12 credit hours for undergrads and 9 for grad students, but check your school's policy.

2. Keep Your I-20 Valid and Up-to-Date

Your I-20 has a program end date. If you need more time to complete your degree, you must apply for a program extension from your DSO before the end date. Extensions must be requested before your current I-20 expires.

3. Report Address Changes Within 10 Days

You must update your address with your international student office and your DSO whenever you move. This is a federal requirement — DSOs must keep current address information in the SEVIS system.

4. Do Not Work Without Authorization

Unauthorized employment is a serious status violation. F-1 students may only work:

  • On-campus jobs (up to 20 hours/week during the semester, full-time during breaks)
  • CPT (with DSO authorization on your I-20)
  • OPT (with USCIS EAD card)

5. Keep Your Passport Valid

Your passport must remain valid at all times. Renew it at your home country's embassy at least 6 months before it expires. Your DSO can continue to issue I-20s with an expired passport, but you cannot re-enter the US with one.

6. Travel With Proper Documents

When traveling outside the US and returning, you need:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid F-1 visa stamp
  • Valid I-20 with travel signature from your DSO (within the last 12 months)
  • Proof of enrollment or enrollment letter

What to Do If You Violate Your Status

If you accidentally fall out of status (e.g., dropped below full-time enrollment without authorization), contact your DSO immediately. Options may include a Reinstatement application to USCIS or departing and re-entering the US with a new I-20.

Your DSO Is Your Best Friend

When in doubt, contact your Designated School Official (DSO) at the international student services office. They are there to help you navigate any status question. Don't guess — ask.
