OPT Timeline: When to Apply and What to Expect in 2026
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is the most popular post-graduation work authorization for F-1 students. It allows you to work in your field of study for up to 12 months after graduation (up to 36 months for STEM majors). But getting your Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) takes time — and missing deadlines can cost you months of work authorization. Here's your OPT timeline for 2026.
Key OPT Dates and Deadlines
- 90 days before graduation: You become eligible to apply for post-completion OPT
- 60 days before graduation: Recommended time to submit your OPT application to USCIS
- Graduation date: Your OPT start date can be between your graduation date and 60 days after
- USCIS processing time: Currently 3–5 months in 2026 (check USCIS.gov for current times)
Step-by-Step OPT Application Process
- Meet with your DSO (Designated School Official) to request an OPT recommendation on your I-20
- Wait for your new I-20 with OPT recommendation (usually 3–5 business days)
- File Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) with USCIS
- Include: I-20 with OPT recommendation, passport copy, F-1 visa copy, I-94 printout, passport photos, filing fee ($410 in 2026)
- Receive your EAD card in the mail (2–5 months later)
- Find a job in your field and report your employer to your DSO within 10 days of starting
STEM OPT Extension
If your degree is in a STEM field, you can apply for a 24-month extension, giving you a total of 36 months of OPT. You must apply for the extension before your standard OPT expires and while you are employed by an E-Verify employer.
Common OPT Mistakes
- Applying too late — USCIS takes months, don't apply 2 weeks before graduation
- Failing to report your employer to your DSO
- Letting your OPT expire while still employed (seriously violates your visa status)
- Not applying for STEM extension in time
Start Early
Apply for OPT 60–90 days before your desired start date. USCIS processing has been slow — students who wait until graduation often can't start work on time.
