What Happens After You Pay the SEVIS Fee?

You have paid the I-901 SEVIS fee. So what now? The payment is only useful if you have the receipt and know what to do with it. Here is what to expect after the money goes through.

You get an official payment receipt

Once the fee is processed, the SEVIS system generates an official I-901 payment confirmation. This receipt is the document that proves you paid, and it shows your name, SEVIS ID, and the amount. Save a copy and print one.

How long it takes

A card payment made directly is often confirmed within minutes. When the payment is processed on your behalf, the official receipt is typically ready within one to three days while the system finalises it. Either way, do not leave it to the last minute before your interview.

What to do with the receipt

  • Bring it to your visa interview. The consular officer may ask to see proof the SEVIS fee is paid.
  • Keep it for your travel. Border officers can also ask for it when you enter the United States.
  • Store a digital copy. Email it to yourself so you can reprint it if the paper copy goes missing.

Your next steps

With the SEVIS fee handled, the rest of the visa process continues: complete the DS-160 form, pay the visa application fee, and schedule your interview. The SEVIS receipt sits in your document folder alongside your I-20 or DS-2019, passport, and DS-160 confirmation.

Remember

The official I-901 receipt is the proof that matters. Bring it to your interview and keep a digital copy for entry into the United States.
