How to Verify Your I-901 SEVIS Fee Payment Receipt
Paying the I-901 SEVIS fee is only half the job. The receipt is what actually proves you paid, and consular officers and border officers can both ask to see it. A few minutes of checking now saves a panic the day before your interview.
What the official receipt should show
Your I-901 payment confirmation is a one-page document. Confirm that every field is correct:
- Your name, spelled exactly as on your I-20 or DS-2019 and passport.
- Your SEVIS ID, the N number, matching your form.
- The amount paid, $350 for F-1 / M-1 or $220 for most J-1.
- A payment confirmation showing the fee is received.
If the name or SEVIS ID does not match your I-20, the receipt will not be accepted, so this is the part to get right.
Confirming the payment independently
You can check the status of your I-901 payment on the official U.S. payment system using your SEVIS ID. A valid payment shows as received there. If you paid through SEVISmate, your dashboard links you straight to the official portal so you can confirm the payment yourself, and your receipt is stored there to download or reprint any time.
What to do if something is wrong
If a detail is incorrect, do not ignore it. A wrong SEVIS ID may mean the payment attached to the wrong record. Contact support right away (or your school's DSO) so it can be traced and corrected before your interview. The earlier you raise it, the more time there is to fix it.
Keep copies in more than one place
Print the receipt and also save a digital copy to your email and phone. You will want it at the visa interview and again when you enter the United States, and paper goes missing at the worst times.
The check that matters most
Name and SEVIS ID on the receipt must match your I-20 or DS-2019 exactly. Everything else is recoverable; a mismatch here is what gets receipts rejected.
